2013 Buick Verano Review
Last year, GM’s Buick Division entered the compact sedan competition in 2012 with the introduction of the Verano.
The 2013 Buick Verano is largely unchanged from the previous year, with a couple of notable exceptions.
For example, the Verano is now available with an optional 2.0 L turbocharged engine. This smallish four-cylinder power plant still packs a punch. It can generate up to 250 hp and take the Verano from zero to sixty in just 6.6 seconds. The turbo four still gets 30 mpg on the highway when mated to the standard six-speed automatic. One can opt for a six-speed manual in the turbo version as well. With the manual, the turbocharged engine is capable of 32 mpg highway. These figures approximate the fuel economy figures for a Verano equipped the standard 2.4 L non-turbo engine.
The standard Verano engine is still capable of up to 180 hp and 171 lb-ft of torque, although this is just a modest amount of power for a compact luxury sedan. Still, the engine impresses by getting 32 mpg on the highway.
The turbo version can also be equipped with Buick’s cross-traffic warning system. Also, Buick’s Intellilink system is now an available option on both the standard and the turbo Verano. One can also opt for a navigation system in all but the base Verano. The Verano also includes an optional sunroof.
However, the base Verano does include a host of features like a tilting/telescoping steering wheel, a 7-in touchscreen display, dual-zone climate control, fog lights, and remote engine start. Trunk space is more than adequate at 15.2 cu ft. This amount of trunk space puts the 2013 Verano among the leaders in its class.
The convenience group includes the blind spot warning system, rear parking sensors, and heated rear view mirrors. Opt for the leather trim level and enjoy both heated seats and a heated steering wheel. Those choosing a leather upholstered Verano will also be treated to a nine-speaker Bose audio system.
Safety is addressed via a full array of frontal and side impact airbags. Stability control and traction control are also standard safety features.
Buick employs a number of sound reduction methods to make for a very quiet cabin. There is seating for four adults, although the two seated in the rear will find legroom to be adequate although not generous. On the other hand, the driver is well-accommodated. Buick makes this point by featuring 6-ft 5-in NFL star Peyton Manning in its Verano TV commercials.
The 2013 Buick Verano comes standard with larger 18-inch alloy wheels. These contribute to crisp and athletic handling. Still, one might expect a smooth ride in any Buick, and the Verano, although a compact, comes through in this regard.
