Many drivers think of all wheel drive as something only needed in heavy snow or ice, but the Buick AWD system can also provide advantages in any road condition, even on dry pavement. The Regal features an automatic system that is capable of adjusting how much power is sent to each wheel, both front and back and side to side. In slippery conditions the system will send power to each wheel for better traction.

AWD offers benefits in performance compared to front wheel drive cars, by not asking the front wheels to steer and put down power at the same time. Compared to rear wheel drive, the system increases control by adjusting power distribution towards the front to prevent dangerous oversteer, which can lead to spins and crashes.

During cornering or emergency maneuvers, the AWD system will intelligently adjust the power distribution towards the rear wheels, allowing the front wheels to focus on cornering safely, reducing understeer in critical situations. The Regal AWD system’s computer sensors are constantly analyzing road conditions and driver input to provide the best possible distribution of engine power for performance and safety in all road conditions. For instance, when pulling away from a stoplight, power will be sent evenly to front and rear wheels for maximum acceleration. Once at speed, the system will be at work constantly monitoring and adjusting the torque distribution. The Regal GS is equipped with an adjustable sport mode, which will bias the system towards the rear wheels for better performance driving.

The rear wheels use an electronic limited slip differential, which allows for rapid adjustment of power between the left and right rear wheels for better cornering performance. This results in better balance while driving, and provides better control during fast turns and maneuvers.

This AWD system is available on 2014 Regals equipped with the turbocharged 2.0 liter engine, providing 259 horsepower with 295 ft-lbs of torque. The Regal now joins with the Enclave, Encore and LaCrosse as the latest AWD equipped Buick model. Buick is a luxury car brand offering quality interiors, modern electronic technology, and the perfect blend of fuel economy and engine performance, and is expanding in both North America and abroad in China.
