2016 GMC Sierra Featuring eAssist Hybrid Technology
Breaking new ground, the 2016 GMC Sierra is offering a better way to work. The eAssist powertrain will be one of the first of its kind in a mainstream pickup truck. This system utilizes hybrid technology and electrification technologies to boost performance and save fuel.
The 5.3-liter V-8 engine is the natural starting point for this powertrain. It already includes Active Fuel Management which reduces cylinder user during highway cruises. Of course, it also utilizes direct injection and variable valve timing for efficiency.
To that powerhouse, GMC is adding a compact lithium-ion battery and an accompanying electric motor. This makes a trio of power generators, giving the Sierra eAssist quite an edge. During cylinder deactivation, the hybrid energy allows for passing and acceleration without demanding that the cylinders be reactivated.
The compact induction motor has the ability to boost torque by 44 lb.-ft., always a good asset for a busy working truck. Using advanced software controls, it also increases horsepower by 13. GMC has utilized a liquid-cooled power inverter module to ensure the truck’s ability to deliver that power even when the load is heavy,
Braking is part of the energy conservation process. The eAssist engine will pause during long brake intervals and resume as soon as the driver lifts a foot from the brake pedal. This Start-Stop capability easily saves fuel at stop lights, at drive-throughs, and in stop-and-go traffic. It also greatly reduces the truck’s global footprint. Regenerative braking adds a fourth power source by recovering energy that is created during the braking process. This energy helps keep the onboard battery charged.
The truck’s build is also part of the eAssist package. For one thing, the lithium-ion battery pack adds to the truck’s positive weight distribution because it is located under the center console. Also, it is lighter weight than many other hybrid batteries. Even better, the truck enjoys a 6-percent increase in aerodynamic flow. The standard soft tonneau cover helps direct the wind. Automatic grille shutters do even more. They close when the truck exceeds 30 mph, reducing the drag that raises fuel consumption.
The Sierra eAssist can improve city fuel economy by 2 mpg. It also boosts highway fuel economy to 24 mpg. The final rate is 20 mpg combined. The best part is that it manages better fuel economy while gaining ground in horsepower and torque outlay. The eAssist generates 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque.
With its many comforting features and advanced dash technologies, the Sierra eAssist really can be the whole package for commercial and personal buyers. This tough hybrid truck is ready to lead the way without compromising on efficiency or performance.
