2018 Buick Enclave Builds on Success of it’s First Generation

The Buick Enclave arrived a few years ago to fill a niche between regular and luxury three-row rides. This premium three-row has earned many fans along the way. The introduction of the 2018 Buick Enclave will be another step forward for the popular SUV.

Although the Enclave design was still considered new, Buick engineers were eager to meet the demands of a growing clientele. Since families always need more space, the new Enclave meets that demand with more third-row wiggle room. Measured against the Acura MDX, it has 5.6 inches more legroom. It also has more than the Audi Q7 or the Infiniti QX60. Despite the new length, Buick kept the turning circle tight, pleasing the family driver.

Passengers enjoy a better ride quality, despite the size of the SUV. To reduce bounce, engineers utilized a five-link rear suspension. A McPherson front strut suspension further isolates the ride. Performance is enhanced with the addition of a nine-speed automatic transmission. The new engine is expected to crank out 302 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque. Keeping fuel use low in city driving, the engine has stop-start technology. Buick offers a new switchable all-wheel drive. This offers greater efficiency and improved control. An active twin-clutch rear differential helps this big SUV hold the road.

The full safety system includes 17 radar, ultrasonic and camera sensors. Every Enclave has seven airbags, including a GM-exclusive front center airbag. A rearview camera keeps an eye on your path during reverse maneuvers. You can also get helpful aids such as a following distance indicator, a forward collision alert, and a lane departure warning. The safety alert seat, another exclusive, makes the warnings more meaningful by adding vibrations. There is also an exit warning to help parents remember to check for sleeping children in carseats.

Every Enclave has a frameless infotainment screen. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay expand what the system can do. A complementary OnStar subscription offers a WiFi hotspot. The OnStar Basic Plan is free for five years. Other standards include push button start, a tri-zone programmable thermostat, six USB ports, and a hands-free power-programmable liftgate.
