Nevertheless, the demand for premium luxury remains strong as ever and Buick aims to take advantage with the new 2013 Buick Encore.

At first glance, the Encore’s diminutive size is a definite departure from Buicks of old. In fact, it seems a bit out of step with the traditional image of premium luxury. But that all falls away thanks to the Encore’s tasteful brightwork and sophisticated styling, proving that even a small car can enjoy large car styling. The standard 18-inch painted cast aluminum wheels sets the entire design off with a jewel-like quality.

Once you step inside, the Encore leaves no doubt as to what it aims to be. From the high-quality switchgear to the carefully crafted design an excellent choice of interior materials, the inner sanctum of the Encore offers evidence of its luxury bonafides. It also helps that Buick maximized the Encore’s interior space, giving it a commodious feeling that belies its true size.

Under the hood lies a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The 138-horsepower engine provides enough motivation for comfortable performance on city streets and the open road. The standard FWD Encore achieves an EPA-estimated 25 mpg city and 33 mpg highway, besting most other crossovers. When equipped with all-wheel drive, the Encore gains an extra 119 pounds over its 3190-pound curb weight, earning it an EPA-estimated 23 mpg city and 30 mpg highway.

One definite advantage to the Encore’s small size lies in its superb nimbleness. Thanks to its 36.7-feet turning radius, U-turns and other situations that require a bit of finesse are no problem for the compact luxury crossover. Parking spots that would flummox most midsize crossovers are an absolute breeze for the Encore to maneuver in and out of.

While the $24,950 base Encore offers a multitude of standard features, buyers have their pick of three feature packages and an assortment of standalone options. The Convenience Package adds niceties like remote start, electrochromatic rearview mirrors and door automatic climate control, while the Leather Package offers leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, heated seats and more. The Premium Package throws rain-sensing wipers, forward collision alert and lane departure warning into the mix. Fully equipped, the Encore tops out at around $32,000.
