Canyon Adds Duramax Diesel Engine Option

In an innovative move, GMC has recently announced that it will be adding to the class-leading capabilities of the 2016 GMC Canyon this fall by introducing an all-new powertrain option. The GMC Canyon will now have the powertrain option of having a 2.8-liter Duramax diesel engine for its powerplant. This engine operates on diesel fuel and is capable of delivering 181 horsepower that gives the Canyon a trailering capacity of up to 7,700 pounds. This engine is expected to give the GMC Canyon better fuel efficiency than the gasoline-fueled engines currently available. According to studies done by outside inspectors, the Duramax engine is going to make the Canyon one of the cleanest diesel trucks ever made by General Motors. All in all, this is certain to please discerning truck buyers looking for a great diesel truck.

To help complement the Duramax engine’s capabilities, GMC is adding a number of supporting features and new technologies to the Canyon. The following are just a few of the features being added:

– A state-of-the-art, electronically controlled two-speed transfer case on Canyons equipped with 4-wheel drive.

– To reduce powertrain vibration and noise, a Hydra-Matic 6L50 six-speed automatic transmission coupled with a Centrifugal Pendulum Vibration Absorber in the torque converter is standard.

– An innovative, diesel exhaust brake system that dramatically reduces brake wear and increases vehicle control on steep grades.

– A brand new built-in trailer brake controller exclusive to diesel models of the Canyon will come as a standard feature.

Overall, the new features will enhance the Canyon’s capabilities and will make it a great truck in GMC’s lineup.

Discussing the new features and addition of Duramax to the Canyon, GMC’s Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Duncan Aldred, said, “The new Duramax diesel takes the GMC Canyon’s award-winning capabilities to a new level in its segment.”

The SLT Crew Cab and SLE models will have the Duramax engine as an available powertrain option on either two-wheel drive or on four-wheel drive models. The Duramax will cost $3,730 more than the V-6 equipped models of the Canyon.

A trailering package is also available for the Canyon models equipped with the Duramax. The trailering package includes an automatic locking rear differential, a hitch receiver, and a seven-pin connector. This gives the pickup a maximum trailering rating of about 7,700 pounds and a gross vehicle weight rating of about 6,200 pounds.

In terms of utilizing that capacity, Canyon offers very supportive payload elements. The standard CornerStep rear bumper, 13 tie-downs in the truck bed, an available spray-in bed liner, two-level cargo bed loading, and the EZ Lift-and-Lower tailgate all make getting the toughest payload aboard the truck an easy task.

With the Duramax option for its powertrain and all of the great features that the Canyon is packed with, it is easy to see why AutoWeek named the GMC Canyon its “Best of the Best Truck for 2015”.
