GMC Sierra Goes on a Diet…

Anyone who has wanted to buy a pickup truck but has balked at the notoriously low miles per gallon the vehicles maintain now may be able to finally get the multi-purpose vehicle they have been dreaming of.

General Motors Corporation is looking into making some large-scale changes to their full sized pickups including the GMC Sierra by no later than 2019. Among the changes include reducing the weight of these popular trucks by several hundred pounds.

In fact, 2014 trucks by GM have already started “losing weight,” after receiving a slimming 250 to 400 pound trim down during this summer’s redesign process. The brand has also kept up with the technological advances for engines and transmissions which reduce the consumption of fuel in their vehicles, making their trucks viable options for businesses and individuals which require the use of a pickup truck but don’t want to spend a fortune on gas.

GM will be making multiple small changes to their pickup models between now and 2019, the year they will be launching completely overhauled Sierras into the market. These changes include using lighter weight materials to build the vehicles such as composite and aluminum rather than strictly steel.

By creating a lighter weight, more fuel efficient pickup truck, GM will be able to cater to a new group of customers: those who want the convenience of a good pickup truck, while still maintaining their eco-conscious lifestyle.

As of now, the lightest GM pickup model still weighs in at an 4,387 pounds. Though the models are equipped with more fuel-efficient guts, the pickups most likely won’t see a dramatic reduction in fuel consumption until the company builds a model that weights significantly less. The newest and improved GM models were put on sale about six-weeks ago as a line of newly redesigned 2014 models.

GM and pickup fans can look forward to the innovative changes the company will be making to its popular and reliable models over the next five years.
