GM’s Military Discount Program

General Motors (GM) has had a long and beneficial relationship with members of the military. GM currently employs thousands of veterans and regularly gives to charitable causes related to the military. Part of this commitment extends to the recently upgraded military discount program. This program provides very deep discounts on new vehicles of all brands to members of the military and some veterans. It is commonly recognized as one of the best military discount programs in the auto industry. Anyone interested in the discount should understand several important details about the program.

Qualifying For the Discount

Anyone who is actively serving in any branch of the military is eligible for the discount. Veterans who have been discharged for less than one year are also eligible. Retirees from the military receive the discount as well. One of the largest benefits is that the spouse of any qualified person can share the discount even if they did not serve in the military.

Discount Pricing

The military discount from GM allows qualified individuals to purchase a Buick, Chevrolet or GMC vehicle for the invoice price. The invoice price is the amount a dealership would normally pay for a vehicle. This is often far below the manufacturer suggested retail price and even most sale prices. The invoice price does not include any additional features or improvements that the dealer has made to the vehicle.

Combining Discounts and Incentives

Another benefit of the GM military discount program is that the invoice pricing can be combined with nearly any other incentive. This includes discounts from GM rewards cards, dealer incentives and manufacturer discounts. The combination of different incentives with the military discount can lower the price of a vehicle by a large amount.

Eligible Vehicles

Most new vehicles are eligible for the military discount program. GM will apply the discount to any Chevrolet, GMC or Buick from the current or next model year. The main restriction is that the vehicle must be completely unused. Families can choose to purchase or lease a vehicle. Military families are also limited to two vehicles at any one time under the discount program guidelines. The discount must be used at the time of purchase and cannot be applied retroactively to previous purchases.

Dealer Participation

Something that can be confusing about the GM military discount program is that dealer participation is optional. Dealers can choose to opt out of the program completely. They can also change some of the conditions of the discount program. Military families and veterans might find dealerships that limit the car models that can be discounted or that limit combinations of incentives. Military families or veterans should check with a dealership about how the discount is implemented before deciding to make a purchase.
