carcaretipsWhen you get a new car, you’ll want to take great care of it so that it lasts a long time. Regular maintenance is the key to taking care of a car, and there are many things that you can do to care for your vehicle on your own.

Get Your Oil Changed Regularly

If you are looking for an easy way to take care of your car, then keeping your oil changed is one of the simplest things that you can do. Be sure to check your oil levels every few weeks to keep the engine running smoothly.

Take Care of Your Parking Brakes

The parking brake can be handy to have when you’re parked on a steep hill. However, you can damage your brake system if you leave it on while driving. Each time you turn the car on, make sure that the parking brake is not engaged.

Replace Brake Fluid

Your brake fluid can attract moisture and cause the brake parts to fail. At least once a year, be sure to replace your brake fluid and also dry out the brake system.

Always Use Car Soap

Sometimes, you may be tempted to wash your new car with dish suds or other soaps that aren’t designed specifically for cars. But in order to keep your paint looking fresh and vibrant, be sure to choose a soap that is designed for clear coat finishes.

Hose Off the Underside

At the same time, neglecting the underside of your car can be a problem. Dust, grime, and winter road salt can get stuck to the underside and cause permanent damage. Be sure that you hose off the entire car whenever you give it a wash.

Apply Wax

Keeping your car waxed is a great way to protect the new paint job. A good coat of wax every six months will keep the shine on your paint for years to come.

Protect the Interior

There are several ways to keep the interior fresh and new. Always try to park in the shade or use a UV shield to keep your seats from drying out. A cloth seat cover can also be useful for protecting your seats from the sun. If you live in a rainy climate, you may want to install rain shields that prevent rainwater from dripping in through your windows.

Keep Your Coolant Fresh

It’s important to clean out your cooling system at least once a year. You can do this by flushing out the old coolant and replacing it with new liquids. Use a mix that is half coolant and half water; this way, you will prevent corrosion.

Shift with Care

When you shift gears while you’re in motion, it places a lot of stress on the transmission. Be sure that you come to a full stop before you change gears into reverse.

Drive on a Full Tank

Driving on a low fuel tank can actually be harmful to your vehicle. This is because it may cause the tank to suck oxygen and other non-gasoline particles into the fuel line. These other molecules can damage the pump and filter. Instead, be sure that you keep your tank near full and avoid letting it dip below 1/3 of a tank.

Work With a Mechanic to Maintain Your Vehicle

Each vehicle comes with its own maintenance schedule, so you should speak with your mechanic about the dates when you’ll need to come back for maintenance. Oil changes, replacing spark plugs, and checking the transmission are all critical to maintain your vehicle’s functionality.

At the same time, don’t wait until your appointment to check how your vehicle is doing. If you notice anything unusual about the way your vehicle is running, be sure to schedule an appointment with the mechanic ahead of your maintenance date.

As you can see, there are many ways to take care of your new car so that it stays looking new for a long time to come. Whenever you’re in doubts about how to keep your car maintained, then you can always visit a mechanic to get helpful tips and services for taking care of your vehicle.
