How to Remove a Car Battery

If you’re wondering how to remove a car battery, you’re not alone in Troy. Your car battery is obviously an extremely important part of your car, so being in the know when it comes to how to remove car battery parts is helpful. This is why our service center has assembled a guide for safely and expertly removing a car battery below!

How to Remove a Car Battery: Prepping

A deadly shock could be emitted by your powerful car battery, so you need to take the proper precautions to protect yourself. Here’s what you need to have to prepare.

  • Insulated work gloves to protect from the shock
  • Safety goggles so your eyes won’t be hurt by corrosive agents.
  • Zip ties for keeping battery cables in the right place. If they touch, sparks could ignite and create a fire hazard.
  • Wrench or Pliers
  • Cloth
  • Take off your jewelry to ensure that you won’t be shocked!
  • Find a well-ventilated space: this is a protocol you’ll want to adopt for almost any DIY car maintenance tasks.
  • Get a battery cable removal tool if your terminal is fused, available through our dealership near Troy.

Removing a Car Battery: The Process

There are many indicators that your battery is dying, such as slow engine starts or sub-optimal performance on your interior lights. Dayton drivers can handle this by removing the battery and replacing it. Here’s how to remove it:

  • Starting with the negative terminal, which should be indicated by a “minus” sign on the plastic cover. Remove the nut before pulling out the negative cable.
  • Do the same for the positive end and cable, but make sure the cables do not touch.
  • There may be a bracket in place to secure the battery, but you should be able to remove it by locating the screws and unscrewing them.
  • Time to remove the battery; you’ll want to lift it straight up. Lift with your legs, as some batteries weigh up to 40 pounds!
