What Should You Do When Your Car Overheats?

Have you ever experienced your car overheating? It can be startling! Here is how to respond calmly and effectively, which will ensure your safety and prevent any further damage.

Pull Over Safely: You’ll know that your car is overheating when you see the temperature gauge climbing into the red zone or see steam billowing from under the hood. You must act swiftly but safely. Pull your vehicle to the side of the road or a safe parking area but avoid abrupt movements to maintain control and prevent accidents. You should signal and move over swiftly.

Engine Off: When you’ve safely pulled over, the first thing that you should do is turn off the engine. This step is crucial and will halt the combustion process and stop generating additional heat. Be sure to let the car sit for at least 15 minutes, allowing the engine to cool down.

Carefully pop the hood: When the engine has cooled, cautiously open the hood of your car. You should never attempt to open it while it’s still hot because the steam could burn you. Next, check for coolant leakage such as puddles under the car or steam coming from the radiator.

Coolant Levels: If you have gloves or a cloth, check the coolant reservoir level. This is typically located near the radiator; it will be a translucent tank marked “hot” and “cold” level. If it’s low, carefully add coolant or water (be sure that the engine is cool) to bring it up to the appropriate level. Avoid opening the radiator cap when the engine is hot, coolant could spray out and burn you.

 Assess the Situation: A few minutes after you’ve added coolant or water, start the engine and observe the temperature gauge. If you notice other issues like strange noises or smoke or if the gauge starts to climb rapidly again, you should call for roadside assistance or a tow truck.

Get Professional Help: If the problem persists despite adding coolant it would be best to seek assistance from a qualified mechanic. They will diagnose the issue and perform any necessary repairs so that your vehicle is safe to drive again.
