Will GMC get a version of the upcoming Chevy Medium Duty Trucks?

The GM brand has revealed plans for its newest Class 4 and Class 5 Silverados. Will these medium duty conventional level trucks be offered in a GMC variant? A GMC spokesperson has simply said there is no news at this time.

GMC continues to move more toward its premium side. It does have commercial vehicles such as the helpful Savana van, but GMC has been focused on its SUVs and other personal transportation. It remains the only brand exclusively dedicated to professional grade capability as well as technology and amenities.

It’s logical to expect that developments at Chevrolet might carry over to GMC. The GMC Canyon, for instance, shares some of its DNA with the Chevy Colorado. Yet the Canyon is more upscale from the base edition on up. Likewise, the GMC Sierra is a step up from the Chevy Silverado, although they share some traits in common. Many GMC SUVs have counterparts in the Chevy lineup. Then there are shared exclusive features, such as CornerSteps on the GM trucks.

Growth in the GMC family has been focusing on the Denali lineup. These vehicles offer luxury level accommodations and high horsepower to please the driver. You can find them on the Sierra, Sierra 2500 and Sierra 3500 HD models as well as Acadia, Terrain and Yukon SUVs.

The SUV and truck maker is fully focused on fulfilling consumer expectations. After all, that’s what has it winning awards. The 2017 Brand Image Award for Most Refined Brand was awarded to GMC by Kelley Blue Book. This was the automaker’s fourth win. It is especially telling that the award is based on a poll of 12,000 new vehicle shoppers. Consumers responded to the extra attention to design and detail.

Shoppers can find real power in the Sierra line-up. 2500 and 3500 HD models offer a new Duramax turbo-diesel. This V-8 leads its class with 445 horsepower. There is a 19-percent bump in torque compared to the 2016 model. The standard Sierra has a class-best tow rating of 12,500 pounds. There are three powertrain choices. Top editions cranks out 420 horsepower and 460 lb.-ft. of torque.

Lower operating costs are another way the Sierra lineup seeks to serve its commercial customers. Engines are designed to minimize fuel waste. Active fuel management utilizes velocity and reduces gas use. Active air shutters improve aerodynamics on the Sierra fleet.
