Prepping Your Vehicle for Winter
Prepping Your Vehicle for WinterÂ
As winter approaches, ensuring your vehicle is ready for the cold weather is crucial for both safety and performance. Here is a guide to help you prepare your car for the winter months.Â
- Tires
Be sure to Inspect your tires for tread wear before winter comes along! You can consider switching to winter or all-season tires with adequate grip. Your vehicle will also have better traction and stability on icy roads if your tires are properly inflated, aim for a tread depth of at least 6/32 inches. Winter conditions demand proper tire performance!Â
- Battery
Cold weather can reduce the performance of your car’s battery. Most auto parts stores offer free battery tests, have your battery tested to ensure it can hold a charge and functions effectively. However, if your battery is three or more years old or shows signs of weakness, it might be time for it to be replaced. Â
- Antifreeze Levels
In low temperatures, Antifreeze is vital for preventing your engine from freezing! Check the coolant level and ensure its mixed correctly with water (according to your vehicle’s specifications). If it’s been more than two years since the last service, consider flushing the cooling system. Â If you are unsure of how to check Antifreeze Levels or flush the cooling system you can schedule a service with us here at Dave Arbogast Buick-GMC.Â
- Windshield Wipers
Along with Winter comes snow and ice, which means having the proper windshield wipers on your vehicle before that weather is essential. Replace old wipers with winter-specific blades that resist ice buildup and keep your windshield washer fluid topped up with a winter formula to prevent it from freezing.Â
- Lights
The days in winter are shorter, which means you’ll be relying on your vehicle’s lights more. Be sure that all lights, including headlights, taillights, and turn signals, are functioning correctly. Also, before you get on the road, lean any grime or snow off your lights for maximum visibility.Â
- Emergency Kit
It is always best to be prepared for the unexpected! Be ready for emergencies by stocking your car with essentials like blankets, a flashlight, first aid supplies, and non-perishable snacks. A shovel and sand or kitty litter can also be helpful for traction if you get stuck. These things may seem out pf place in your vehicle or unnecessary, but it is always better to be safe! Â
Proper preparation enhances your driving experience and helps avoid potential breakdowns and accidents! By following these tips, you can ensure your vehicle remains reliable and safe throughout the winter season. Stay safe and drive carefully!Â
